For stiletto enthusiasts, there were boots, sandals and pumps propped up on spindly heels. Loewe’s came with shiny balloons strapped to the front of models’ feet. Prada, Tom Ford and Bottega Veneta, meanwhile, made a case for a new heel: one that slants at an inward angle, offering a contemporary take on the conventional stiletto silhouette.

Keen to keep your feet firmly on the ground? Sporty sneakers were big news; seen at The Row, Louis Vuitton and Isabel Marant. The trainer triumph of the season came courtesy of Gucci’s collaboration with Adidas, which resulted in colourful, Gucci-fied Gazelles.

Fanciful flats were all the rage on the runways, too. Silky ballet pumps were interspersed with smart loafers at Miu Miu, and Simone Rocha sent embellished footwear down the catwalk. Elsewhere, belt-like buckles laddered models’ legs at Del Core, Emporio Armani and Courrèges, and added gothic edge to boots at Roberto Cavalli and Dior.

Outdoorsy types will be pleased to hear that fashion wellies struck a chord with designers at the autumn/winter 2022 shows, the best iteration of which came courtesy of Virginie Viard at Chanel. (It doesn’t get chicer than wellies stamped with double Cs.)

Enthusiasm for extra height isn’t set to cease, given that platforms and flatforms were seen across the board. Look no further than Valentino, Versace and Rick Owens for shoes that make a sure-fire statement.

Here, the standout shoe trends seen at the autumn/winter 2022 shows.
